Correct Answer - Option 2 : 8 rupees

Given:

Prize of sugar increased 20%

Consumption decreased 6 kg

Total expenditure = 240

Formula used:

Price × Consumption = Expenditure

Concept:

Price and consumptions are inversely proportional

Calculation:

Let the old price of sugar be x

Let the old consumption of sugar be y kg

Prize of sugar increase 20%, then new price = 120%x

Consumption decreased by 6 kg, then new consumption = (y - 6) kg

Old Price × Old consumption = Expenditure

⇒ x × y = 240      ---(1)

New Price × New consumption = Expenditure

⇒ (120%)x (y – 6) = 240

⇒ 120/100x (Y – 6) = 240

⇒ x × y – 6x = 200

Put the value of x × y from equation (1)

⇒ 240 - 6x = 200

⇒ 40 = 6x

⇒ 40/6 = x

Old price = 40/6

New price = (120%) × 40/6

⇒ 8 rupees

∴ Now the price of sugar for 1 kg is 8rupees.
