  • Ram Mohan Roy was given the title of 'Raja' by Akbar II, the Mughal emperor, who sent him to England to represent him.
  • He is often called the 'Father of Indian Renaissance. Freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale called Roy the 'Father of Modern India'.
  • Roy was opposed to idol worship and the orthodox rituals of Hinduism. He championed scientific temper and faced a backlash for his views.
  • Roy translated the Vedas and Upanishads into Bengali, Hindi, and English and wrote summaries and treatises on them.
    • He was the founder and editor of two vernacular weekly newspapers viz. Sambad Kaumudi (in Bengali) and Mirat-ul-Akhbar (in the Persian language).
  • He started India’s first English medium school in 1816 in Kolkata that later came to be known as the Anglo-Hindu school.
  • He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828, which acted against the evil practices that existed in the Hindu society, especially, the practice of ‘Sati’.

Jahandar Shah
  • The Mughal emperor Jahandar Shah was the first puppet ruler in Mughal India.
  • He ascended the throne because of the support of a powerful Iranian Noble and his Wazir, Zulfiqar Khan.
  • He was defeated in the battle at Agra on 10 January 1713 by Farrukhsiyar, his nephew and the second son of Azim-ush-Shan, with the support of the Sayyid Brothers.
Mohammad Shah
  • He was a great patron of the arts, including musical, cultural, and administrative developments of the Mughal emperor.
  • He was known as Rangila.
  • He was given the title Abu Al-Fatah Nasir-ud-Din Roshan Akhtar Muhammad Shah and enthroned in the Red Fort.
Bahadur Shah Zafar
  • Bahadur Shah Zafar or Bahadur Shah II was the twentieth and last Mughal emperor (1837–1857).
  • He was the second son of and became the successor to his father, Akbar II.
  • Bahadur Shah Zafar died in the Rangoon jail in November 1862.
