Correct Answer - Option 1 : Drive

Every individual has some desires, that are considered as his needs. Need is a condition or state of mind that prompts or persuades us to act or behave in a specific way.

  • The needs of an individual can be socio-psychological (love, security, freedom, social-acceptance, and social-company) and biological needs (food, sleep, etc.)
  • A need gives rise to a drive. It forces an individual to perform certain actions by bringing psychological tensions to bring balance and satisfaction in their life.

Drive:

  • The drive is an aroused reaction tendency or a stage of heightened tension that sets up activities in individuals and sustains them for increasing the general activity level.
  • It acts as a persistent stimulus to push an organism towards its goal. It is the state of heightened tension leading to the behaviour. It has a direction and valence.
  • The strength of a drive depends upon the strength of the stimulus involving the related need.
  • Drives are generally of two types:
    • Primary or biological drives - hunger, thirst, escape from pain, etc.
    • Secondary or socio-psychological drives - fear, anxiety, desire for approval, aggression, dependence, etc.
  • These drives move an individual to act for the satisfaction of his needs which in turn proves as a reinforcer of the behavior for the continuity and maintenance of the behavior.

Hence, it could be concluded that the physical energy which activates the organism for action is known as "Drive".
