Give

40% marks is required to pass

He got 80 marks and failed by 40 marks

Concept used

Maximum marks is 100%

Calculation

Candidate is required 40% marks to pass the exam. He got 80 marks

According to question

⇒ 80 + 40 = 40%

⇒ 40% = 120

⇒ 1% = 3

⇒ 100% = 3 × 100 = 300

∴ Maximum marks is 300
