The correct answer is 30 percent.

  • Uttar Pradesh has about 3,091 thousand hectares under canal irrigation which is 30.91 percent of the total canal irrigated area of the state.
  • Tubewells are major sources of irrigation followed by Canal, Wells, and Tanks.
  • About 80 percent of irrigation work is being done by tubewells and wells and 19 percent by canals and the remaining 1 percent is done by tanks, lakes, and other sources in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

  • Major Canal Irrigation projects of UP are as below:
    • Eastern Yamuna Canal - Eastern Yamuna Canal, originates from the left bank of the Yamuna river from Tajevala. Through this canal system, the Hindon Yamuna Doab irrigation facility is provided to Saharanpur, Muzzafarnagar, Meerut, and Ghaziabad districts.
    • Upper Ganga Canal- originates from Bheemgauda, Haridwar. Colonel Sir P.T. Kaatle was known as the father of this project. Through this canal system, the Irrigation facility is provided to Haridwar, Saharanpur, Muzzafarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Etah, Mathura, Firozabad, Mainpuri, and Agra districts.
    • Agra Canal System- originates from Noida to provide Irrigation in Faridabad and Gurgaon districts of Haryana, in Mathura and Agra districts of Uttar Pradesh, and in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. 
    • Sharda Canal System- originates from Sharda River near Khatima, Nainital. Nainital, Peelibhit, Bareily, Lakhimpur Kheiri, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Barabanki, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Ghazipur and Prayagraj districts are irrigated through it.
