Correct Answer - Option 3 : Hawkins

Mughal empire laid its foundation by defeating Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat fought by Babur in 1526.

Jahangir is a Mughal emperor who reigned from 1605 till 1627. In 1608, King James I of Great Britain sent Captain William Hawkings to the court of the Mughal emperor, Jahangir requesting permission to trade with them.

  • After William Hawkyns arrived at Surat, he proceeded to Agra to the court of the Great Mughal Jahangir.
  • He reached there in April 1609 and remained for nearly three years.
  • According to the account given in his Journal the emperor took much pleasure in his conversation and assigned him handsome maintenance.
  • His occupation was to combat the intrigues of the Portuguese and to endeavour to obtain formal permission for the establishment of an English factory at Surat.
  • His favour with the emperor enabled him to overcome all difficulties, and the required license was given.
  • It was the first distinct recognition of English commerce in the East.

From the above, it is clear that King James-I of England sent his ambassador Hawkins to the court of Jahangir in 1608.

  • Sir Thomas Roe wast sent as the British ambassador in 1614 at the court of Jahangir by James I.
