Correct Answer - Option 2 : Rolling friction

The correct answer is option 2) i.e. Rolling friction

CONCEPT:

  • Friction: The frictional force is a force that opposes the relative motion of an object. The force acts when two surfaces in contact are moving past one another or when one surface is moving past a stationary surface.
    • Friction is caused due to irregularities on the surface. The irregularities on surfaces get interlocked and thus prevents their tendency to move.
  • Types of friction:
  1. Static friction is defined as the frictional force that acts between the surfaces in contact that are at rest.
  2. Siding friction is the frictional force that acts when two one surface slides past the other or when two surfaces are in a sliding motion.
  3. Rolling friction is the friction force that comes to play when an object rolls over a surface. This happens when the object is spherical, cylindrical or has a similar curved shape.

EXPLANATION:

  • The movement of bicycle tyres is opposed by rolling friction as the tyres roll on the surface.
  • When the tyres of a bicycle are fully inflated, the curved surface in contact with the surface reduces
  • This reduces the rolling friction and thus, makes it easier to ride.

Hence, rolling friction is the concept behind fully inflated bicycle tyres.
