Learning disability is an umbrella term for a wide range of learning problems that are caused due to alteration in brain functioning which affects comprehending and processing of one or more cognitive processes like reading, writing, drawing or arithmetic, etc.  This is caused by neurological or genetic disorders. This is not related to intelligence. 

Major types of Learning disability

Dyspraxia:

  • It is a neurological disorder that impacts an individual's ability to plan and process motor tasks.
  • Individuals with dyspraxia often have language problems, and sometimes a degree of difficulty with thought and perception.
  • Symptoms: 
    • Poor balance, poor posture, and fatigue, poor integration of the two sides of the body, poor hand-eye coordination, lack of rhythm when dancing, doing aerobics, clumsy gait and movement, exaggerated 'accessory movements' such as flapping arms when running, tendency to fall, trip, bump into things and people.
    • Difficulty in motor coordination resulting in poor or out of order movements.

Dyslexia:

  • Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects your ability to read, spell, write, and speak.
  • Symptoms:
    • Delayed Speech, difficulty in spellings and sounds, difficulty in left and right, before and after, etc., misreads words, reverse letters, difficulty in reading, etc. 
    • Difficulty in development of literacy and language-related skills.

ADHD:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that can cause above-normal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors.
  • People with ADHD may also have trouble focusing their attention on a single task or sitting still for long periods of time. Both adults and children can have ADHD.
  • Symptoms:
    • Short attention span, especially for non-preferred tasks.
    • Hyperactivity, which may be physical, verbal, and/or emotional. 
    • Impulsivity, which may manifest as recklessness. 
    • Fidgeting or restlessness.
    • Disorganization and difficulty prioritizing tasks.
    • Poor time management and time blindness.
    • Difficulty in paying attention and action without knowing consequences.

Dysgraphia:

  • Dysgraphia is a learning disability characterized by problems with writing.
  • Symptoms:
    • Illegible handwriting, incorrect spelling and capitalization​, inappropriate sizing and spacing of letters, difficulty copying words, unusual body or hand position when writing, omitting letters and words from sentences.
    • Difficulty in writing associated with the usage of the wrong word during communication.
