Correct Answer - Option 1 : A and C only

Concept:

Breathing:

  • Breathing refers to the process of air moving into and out of the lungs.
  • Breathing, in other words, is a basic give-and-take activity or simply saying just exchange of gases.
  • When we breathe, we take in oxygen-rich air from the environment and exhale carbon dioxide-rich air.
  • This is a continual process that occurs throughout an organism's life.
  • Inhalation is the process of taking in oxygen-rich air. Exhalation, on the other hand, refers to the process of exhaling carbon dioxide-rich air.
  • One inhalation and one exhale makeup one breath.

Respiration:

  • Breathing is not similar to respiration.
  • Respiration is a chemical process whereas breathing is a physical process.
  • In respiration, processes at the cellular level are taking place.
  • Here, glucose (released by complete digestion of food) is broken down into water and carbon dioxide in the presence of oxygen.
  • ATP which is the energy currency is also released.

Explanation:

  • The given four statements are -
    • A. It is a process that provides oxygen to the body - True for Breathing
    • B. In this process water is produced in the cell. - True for Respiration
    • C. This process helps the body to get rid of carbon dioxide. - True for Breathing
    • D. In this process, food breaks down to release energy. - True for Respiration
  • Out of these statements, B and D are a part of the process of respiration and not breathing.
  • Only statements A and C are correct for breathing.

Hence the correct answer to this question is - statements A and C.
