Correct Answer - Option 3 : Pluto

The correct answer is Pluto.

  • In 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the planets to be the bodies in space having the following characteristics:
    • It is in orbit around the Sun.
    • It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape).
    • It has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
  • Pluto perfectly meets the two of these criteria but fails to fulfill the third.
  • In all the billions of years it has lived there, it has not managed to clear its neighborhood.
  • Clearing the neighborhood means that the planet has become gravitationally dominant — there are no other bodies of comparable size other than its own satellites or those otherwise under its gravitational influence, in its vicinity in space.
  • There are some objects from the Kuiper Belt which is under the area of Pluto's gravitational area but the gravitational pull is not strong enough to pull these objects towards Pluto.
  • So from 2006 Pluto is considered a Dwarf Planet, not a planet.
