A galvanometre is a sensitive instrument used to detect the presence of current in a circuit. It can also be used for some electrical measurements. The deflection of its pointer is usually proportional to the current. The deflection is on either side of the zero mark at the centre of the scale depending on the direction of the current.
A galvanometer can be modified suitably to measure (i) current as in an ammeter (ii) potential difference in a voltmeter.
