a2 + 4a + 4 

= (- 3)2 + 4(- 3) + 4 (when a = – 3) 

= (- 3 × – 3)- 12 + 4

(Error is 4 (- 3) = 1) 

= 9 – 12 + 4 = 13 – 12 = 1
