Word root Select the word root to denote the longest possible continuous chain of carbon atoms containing the functional group.

The word roots for chains containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms are given below :

The extra ‘a’ given in parenthesis is used only if the suffix to be added to the word root begins with a consonant. For example,

CH2 = CH-CH2 -CH2 -CH3 is pent-I-ene whereas CH2 =CH-CH2 -CH=CH2 is penta -1, 4-diene.
