Synthetic Detergents are sodium or potassium salts of sulphonic acids. Unlike soaps, detergents can be used in hard water because the calcium and magnesium salts like their sodium or potassium salts are also soluble in water. However, detergents have one disadvantage. Unlike soaps, they are not completely biodegradable and hence cause water pollution.
