After deposing his elder brother Someshvara II during the Chola invasion of Chalukya territory, Vikramaditya VI became the Western Chalukya King, a political move he made by obtaining the support of Chalukya vassals. The end of the Saka period and the start of the Chalukya-Vikrama era coincide during Vikramaditya's reign. He was the most powerful of the Western Chalukya monarchs and ruled the dynasty for the longest time.

Permadideva and Tribhuvanamalla were his titles . He had a number of queens that helped him with administration. Chandala Devi, a princess from the Shilahara royal dynasty of Karad, was given the name Abhinava Saraswati for her artistic abilities. Savala Devi was in command of an Agrahara in Naregal, while Queen Kethala Devi was in control of the Siruguppa district. Vikramaditya VI was a "powerful monarch who ruled across South India," according to historian Kamath, and he holds a "pride of place in Karnataka history." Vikramaditya VI is credited with more Kannada inscriptions than any other king prior to the Vijayanagara era.

Vikramaditya VI is known for his support of the arts and literature. Famous Kannada and Sanskrit poets decorated his court. His brother, prince Kirtivarma, published Govaidya on veterinary science in Kannada, while the poet Brahmashiva produced Samayaparikshe , for which he was given the title Kavi Chakravarti  Bilhana, who was given the title Vidyapati , came to his court from faraway Kashmir and composed a panegyric in Vikramankadevacharita on the life of his patron king.

His authority was compared to Ramarajya  by the poet. Mitakshara, a commentary on Yagnavalkya Smriti, was written by Vijnaneshwara, a well-known jurist in his court . "A King like Vikramarka is not to be seen nor heard of," he wrote about the king. Vikramaditya VI is a follower of the Shaiva faith. During his reign, there was a lot of temple construction. The Mallikarjuna temple, the Mahadeva temple, the Kaitabheshvara temple, and the Kalleshvara temple are all noteworthy structures. According to historian Sen, Vikramaditya VI's 50-year reign was mostly peaceful and affluent.

According to Sen, Vikramaditya VI ruled a wide empire that stretched from Tumkur and Cuddapah in the south to the Narmada river in the north, and up to the Khammam district and Godavari district in the east and south-east.
