Correct option: (c) the energy stored in the capacitor is reduced.

Explanation: 

The capacitance of the capacitor increases initially and then decreases and hence the positive charge on plate A first increases and then decreases. Due to this the current in the outer circuit first flows from B to A and then from A to B.
