Two numbers are in the ratio 5:9. On subtracting 3 from each, ratio becomes 1:2. Find the numbers.

The two numbers are 15 and 27.

X/Y = 5/9

From this we get 9X=5Y

X=5Y/9......1

X+3/Y+3= 1/2

From here 2(X+3) = Y+3....2

Put the above value of X in equation 2

2((5Y/9)+3) = Y+3

Solving we get Y = -27

Putting back in equation 1 we get

X = 5(-27)/9

X = -15
