अभिक्रिया H2 (g) + I2(s) → 2HI (g) के लिये मानक एन्ट्रॉपी परिवर्तन ज्ञात कीजिये यदि I2 ( s), H2 (g) तथा HI ( g ) की मानक एन्ट्रॉपी क्रमशः 116.7, 130.6 एवं 206.3 JK-1 mol-1 है। यदि इस अभिक्रिया के लिए ΔH° का मान + 51.9kJmol-1 हो तो बताइये कि अभिक्रिया स्वतः होगी या नहीं।

ΔS° = 2 × S°(HI) – [ S° (H2) + S° (I2)] 

= 2 × 206.3 - [130.6 + 116.7] 

= 412.6 - 247.3 

= 165.3 JK-1 mol-1 

ΔH° = 51.9 kJ mol-1 

= 51900 J mol-1 

तथा मानक अवस्था में 

T = 298 K 

ΔG° = ΔH° - TΔS ° 

= 51900 - 298 x 165.3 

= 2640.6 J mol-1 

चूँकि ΔG° का मान धनात्मक है अतः अभिक्रिया स्वतः नहीं होगी।
