The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is a nationwide exam designed to determine eligibility for two key academic positions in Indian universities and colleges: Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) with Assistant Professor. The UGC NET 2024 will cover a total of 83 subjects, each with its own specific syllabus outlined by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Until June 2018, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was responsible for conducting the NET exam on behalf of the UGC, but since then, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken over the administration of the exam.

UGC NET Posts and Career Opportunities

Candidates who pass the UGC NET 2024 can qualify for two distinct roles:

  1. Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): Candidates qualifying for JRF are eligible to apply for both the Assistant Professor role and a Research Scholar position. Research scholars receive a stipend of ₹35,000 per month for the first two years and ₹42,000 from the third year onward, as they work on their research in a chosen field. Additionally, JRF-qualified candidates may pursue an Assistant Professor career while also continuing as research scholars.

  2. Assistant Professor: Candidates who pass the eligibility exam for Assistant Professorship are qualified to apply for teaching positions in universities and colleges. While they may also pursue a PhD, it is important to note that candidates who choose to pursue a PhD will not be entitled to any government stipend for their doctoral studies.
