Two particles of masses m and 2m moving in opposite directions collide elastically with velocities v and ν. Find their velocities after collision.

Here, u1 = –ν, u2 = 2ν, m1 = m and m2 = 2m.

Substituting these values in equations(v) and (vi), we get

i.e., the second particle (of mass 2m) comes to a rest while the first (ofmassm) moves with velocity 3ν in the direction shown in figure.
