A load of 100 N falls by gravity a vertical distance of 300 cm When it is suddenly stopped by a collar at the end of a vertical rod of length 6m and diameter 2 cm. The top of the bar is rigidly fixed to a ceiling. calculate the maximum stress and the strain induced in the bar. Table E = 1.96 × 107 N/cm2

Given data:

Weight of the object = 100N

Height of fall = 300 cm

Length of vertical rod = 6m = 600cm

Diameter of rod = 2cm

 = 2cm E = 1.96 × 107 N/cm2

Cross-sectional area of the rod

= A = π/4.d2 = π/4.(2)2 = 3.142 cm2

Maximum stress induced in the bar;

Strain induced in the bar due to impact ei ; We know that

ei = σi /E = 25007.945/(1.96 × 107) = 0.001276

ei = 0.001276
