Three capacitors having capacitances 20μF, 30μF and 40μF are connected in series with a 12V battery. Find the charge on each of the capacitors. How much work has been done by the battery in charging the capacitors?

∴ The equivalent capacity.

(a) Let Equivalent charge at the capacitor = q
C = q/v => q = C × V = 9.23 × 12 = 110μC on each.
As this is a series combination, the charge on each capacitor is same as the equivalent charge which is 110μC.
(b) Let the work done by the battery = W

∴ v = W/q => W = Vq = 110 x 12 x 10-6 = 1.33 x 10-3J.
