It is directly a consequence of Western influence. Though we need to benefit from the improvements in science and technology, we need not mindlessly ape the West. A wide variety in consumables is not a desirable thing if it is to only provide more choice to the consumer. Often choice can lead to confusion and unnecessary waste of time, effort and money. The other aspects of a consumable like eco-friendliness, its bio-degradability and personal need for the product are more important.
