The author does not consider the habit of reading for amusement desirable because it just extracts the narrative portion of a text from the rest. Such people go through the pages rapidly and there remains in their minds a vague idea or two about what they have read. But when they are asked questions concerning those very books, they fail to answer them. A person cannot express an original opinion regarding the contents of a book if she/he reads it for amusement only. Hidden meanings and beauties of a book can be unfolded only when it is carefully read. Moreover, reading for amusement is like an addiction that helps pass time, keeps up a perpetual condition of dreaming and eventually results in destroying all capacity for thought.
लेखक मनोरंजन के लिए पढ़ने की आदत को वांछनीय नहीं मानता है क्योंकि यह आदत किसी रचना के कथात्मक भाग को ही ग्रहण करती है और शेष को छोड़ देती है। ऐसे लोग जल्दी-जल्दी पृष्ठ-प्रति-पृष्ठ पढ़ते हैं और वे जो कुछ पढ़ते हैं उसके विषय में उनके दिमाग में एक या दो धुंधले विचार ही रह जाते हैं। किन्तु जब उन्हीं पुस्तकों के सम्बन्ध में उनसे प्रश्न पूछे जाते हैं तो वे उनका उत्तर नहीं दे पाते हैं। यदि कोई व्यक्ति सिर्फ मनोरंजन हेतु किसी पुस्तक को पढ़ता है तो वह उस पुस्तक की विषय-वस्तु के सम्बन्ध में कोई मौलिक राय नहीं दे सकता है। किसी पुस्तक के अर्थ और सौन्दर्य उसे ध्यानपूर्वक पढ़ने पर ही प्रकट हो सकते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त मनोरंजन हेतु पढ़ना किसी नशे की लत की भाँति है जिससे समय कट जाता है, जो सतत्स्वप्नावस्था बनाए रखती है और अन्ततः उससे विचार करने की शक्ति का विनाश हो जाता है।
