In India, summer is the most terrible of all the seasons. Water sources dry up. The scorching sun sets the sky blazing. Only one, who has looked at the Indian summer sky, can realize how unrelenting the heat can be. Not a trace of mercy can be seen anywhere. The expectation that someday this aspect of the sky would change, that it would become overcast with soft, moisture-laden clouds, is impossible. It seems as though the whole blazing sky would go on burning endlessly. The fields break up into tens of thousands of fissures. It looks as though the lifeblood of Mother Earth is unceasingly flowing out through them like smoke. If one gazes long at its rising, flame-like sinuous movement, it leaves him as it were, dazed with drunkenness. Water sources dry up.
भारत में, ग्रीष्म ऋतु सभी ऋतुओं में सबसे अधिक भयंकर होती है। दहकता हुआ सूरज आकाश से आग की वर्षा करता है। जिसने भारतीय ग्रीष्म ऋतु के आकाश को देखा है वही समझ सकता है कि गर्मी कितनी निष्ठुर हो सकती है। दया का कहीं कोई चिह्न नजर नहीं आता है। यह सोचना भी असंभव प्रतीत होता था कि किसी दिन आसमान का यह रूप बदलेगा, कि इस पर कोमल, नमी-भरे बादल छा जाएँगे। ऐसा मालूम पड़ता है मानो जलता हुआ पूरा आकाश कालांतर तक जलता रहेगा। खेतों में हजारों दरारें पड़ जाती हैं। ऐसा मालूम पड़ता है मानो धरती माँ का जीवन-रक्त उनसे होकर धुएँ के रूप में लगातार बाहर निकल रहा हो। यदि कोई इसकी ज्वाला-सी लपकती, लहराती गति को देर तक देखता रहे तो वह ऐसा हो जाता मानो किसी नशे में चूर हो।
