Gafur, a poor weaver, lives with his motherless daughter, Amina. Drought has affected his fields badly. As a result, he finds it difficult to feed himself, his daughter and his bull, Mahesh. He loves the bull Mahesh as his son. Though he has to beg for rice-water from his neighbours to feed it, he doesn’t think of selling it in the cattle market. This shows he is kind by nature. He is a victim of circumstances, which at times compel him to behave angrily, but he is not cruel. He slaps his dear daughter for not getting anything to eat and drink, but the next moment he is filled with remorse for behaving like that. He becomes violent when he hears the shriek of his daughter and hits Mahesh to death. This shows that he loves his daughter more than anything else.
गफूर एक गरीब जुलाहा है जो अपनी बिन माँ की बेटी अमीना के साथ रहता है। सूखे ने उसके खेतों को बुरी तरह प्रभावित किया है। परिणामस्वरूप उसे स्वयं, अपनी बेटी तथा अपने बैल महेश का भोजन जुटाने में दिक्कत होती है। वह अपने बैल महेश को बेटे की तरह मानता है। यद्यपि उसे अपने पड़ोसियों से चावल का माँड़ मांगकर उसे खिलाना पड़ता है, फिर भी वह महेश को पशु-बाजार में बेचने की बात सोचता भी नहीं है। इससे पता चलता है कि वह दयालु प्रकृति का है। वह परिस्थितियों का मारा हुआ है जो कभी-कभी उसे क्रोधपूर्ण व्यवहार करने को विवश करती हैं, किन्तु वह क्रूर नहीं है। वह कुछ भी खाने पीने को न पाकर अपनी प्रिय पुत्री को थप्पड़ मारता है लेकिन अगले ही क्षण वह इस प्रकार से बर्ताव करने के लिये पश्चाताप से भर जाता है। जब वह अपनी पुत्री की चीख को सुनता है तो वह हिंसक हो जाता है तथा महेश पर घातक प्रहार करता है। यह दर्शाता है कि वह किसी भी और चीज से अधिक अपनी पुत्री से प्यार करता है।
