Both Michael and the village priest are ardent supporters of the values their generations stand for both Michael and the village priest occupy places of importance in the society. They are supposed to enlighten people. But as far as their convictions are concerned, they stand out in contrast. Michael is educated and well-mannered while the village priest is ill-mannered and illiterate. Michael does not believe in baseless and irrational thoughts. He wants to eradicate such baseless beliefs and customs while the village priest is all for sustaining them. When a young woman dies in childbirth, the priest takes the help of a diviner. On his suggestion, he gets the beautiful hedges torn up near the path and right around the school and a school building is pulled drawn.
माइकल और पादरी दोनों ही अपनी-अपनी पीढ़ी के मूल्यों के प्रबल समर्थक हैं। माइकल और गाँव के पादरी दोनों ही का समाज में प्रमुख स्थान है। दोनों से ही यह आशा की जाती है कि वे लोगों का पथ-प्रदर्शन करेंगे। परन्तु जहाँ तक उनके विचारों का प्रश्न है, वे बिल्कुल विरोधाभासी हैं। माइकल पढ़ा-लिखा और शिष्ट है जबकि गाँव का पादरी अनपढ़ और अशिष्ट है। माइकल निराधार और तर्करहित विचारों में विश्वास नहीं रखता है। वह ऐसे निराधार विश्वासों और प्रथाओं का उन्मूलन करना चाहता है जबकि गाँव का पादरी उन्हें बनाए रखने पर आमादा है। जब एक युवती बच्चे को जन्म देते समय मर जाती है तो वह शगुनियाँ का सहारा लेता है। उसकी सलाह के अनुसार वह रास्ते के पास की तथा विद्यालय के ठीक चारों ओर की बाड़ को उखड़वा देता है व विद्यालय के एक भवन को गिरा दिया जाता है।
