The content of the poem the Song of Innocence (The Divine Image) is human soul and that of the Song of Experience (The Human Abstract) human being’s behaviour. When human soul is full of mercy, pity, peace and love, he lives a godly life. But when human being is under control of evils in the absence of virtues, he is surrounded by bad aspects of life. A man is termed good only when there are certain people weighed against him who are bad. Both aspects good and bad take origin in the mind of a man. So they both work in an average human being.
पहली कविता Song of Innocence (The Divine Image) की विषय-वस्तु मानव आत्मा है और दूसरी कविता Song of Experience ( The Human Abstract) की विषय-वस्तु मनुष्य का व्यवहार है। जब मानव आत्मा दया, करुणा, शान्ति तथा प्रेम के गुणों से परिपूर्ण होती है, तो वह ईश्वरीय जीवन जीता है। परन्तु जब गुणों के अभाव में बुराईयाँ मनुष्य को अपने नियंत्रण में ले लेती हैं तो वह जीवन के गलत पहलुओं से घिर जाता है। किसी मनुष्य की दूसरे बुरे लोगों से तुलना करने पर ही उसे अच्छा बताया जा सकता है। अच्छे और बुरे दोनों पहलू मनुष्य के मस्तिष्क में ही जन्म लेते हैं। इसलिए दोनों पहलू सामान्य मानव में साथ-साथ कार्य करते हैं।
