Thomson suggested that an atom is positively charged sphere of radius 10-8 cm. Negatively charged electrons are embedded in the sphere like plums in the pudding, or like the seeds in the edible red interior of a watermelon. Since the two types of charges are equal in amount, the atom on the whole electrically neutral. It is also known as the plum-pudding model.
