The Diwan ordered his men to start a lime kiln near Khejadali, a village of Bishnois. He needed the wood of khejdi trees which were growing in plenty there. When his workers started cutting down the trees, the Bishnois would not let them touch the trees. It was against their religion to cut down any green tree. When the matter was reported to the Diwan he was so much enraged that he himself went to Khejadali to confront the Bishnois.
दीवान ने अपने आदमियों को बिश्नोइयों के गाँव खेजड़ी के निकट चूने की भट्ठी प्रारंभ करने का निर्देश दिया। उसे खेजड़ी के वृक्ष की लकड़ियों की आवश्यकता थी, जो उस इलाके में प्रचुर मात्रा में थे। जब उसके श्रमिकों ने वृक्षों को काटना शुरू किया, तो बिश्नोइयों ने उन्हें वृक्षों को छूने नहीं दिया किसी। भी हरे वृक्ष को काटना उनके धर्म के खिलाफ था। जब दीवान को इस बात की खबर हुई तो वह बहुत ही ज्यादा क्रोधित हो उठा तथा स्वयं बिश्नोइयों का सामना करने खेजडी गाँव पहँचा।
