Land Degradation : The reduction in the quality, productivity and usefulness of fertile land is called land degradation. Human activities are more responsible for land degradation than natural factors. The land degradation occurring due to human activities is a big concern for die world. Today most of the area in the world is suffering from land degradation problem due to excessive land utilization. Land degradation is adversely affecting agriculture, vegetation and human development. The world’s land degradation status can be explained with the help of the world map as follows :
(1) Severe land degradation Area : Maximum area of mid-southern China in Asia, North and South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Most of India, some areas of Arabian peninsula, Southern, middle and eastern area of Europe, south-western area near Sahara desert in Africa, South Africa and Madagascar island, area surrounding lakes in USA, Middle America, Andes in South America and southern area of Brazil are suffering from severe land degradation.
(2) Area causing concern : It includes coastal area and western region, Mid-southern area, Java, Sumatra of Indonesia, Maximum area of Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, North-western Europe, North of Sahara in Africa, Southern and all eastern area of Mid Africa, Most of the area of Southern America and USA.
(3) Area which has stable status : Most of the area of Siberia, Kamchatka Peninsula, Mongolia, Eastern part of India, Coastal areas of North Europe, Mid Africa, Western region of Kalahari desert, Canada in North America, Alasaka, Small islands in North, Brazil and some area of Mid Andes in South Americas, and some areas of south Australia fall in this category.
(4) Area without vegetation : Most of the desert regions of the world, Mongolia in Asia, Area of Loess region of China peninsula, Southern part of North Australia, Sahara Desert, Some part of Southern Arabia, Southern area of Mexico, Most area of Greenland, fall in this category.
