From security poiht of view the basic difference between forts of hilly areas and forts constructed in plain area is, that in hilly areas one or more deep ditches were dug around the fort, by filling water in which, enemies could be stopped; whereas in plain area broad ditches were dug around these forts which were connected with river or pond.
