Draw a line segment AB. Taking a point R not on the line AB, draw a perpendicular to AB from R.

Drawing a perpendicular on a line from a given point. 

Step 1 : Point R is situated externally to line AB.

Step 2 : 

Taking a suitable radius draw on arc from point R using compass. This arc intersects the line AB at points C and D.

Step 3 : 

Keeping the tip of compass on C, draw an arc at the bottom, with same radius and the tip of compass on D. Draw an arc intersecting the previous arc. Thus, point Q obtained and is joined with R. Line PR is perpendicular to AB from point R.
