The ugly middle position refers to Jack’s helplessness and dilemma. It’s ugly because Jack is not used to the women questioning his authority and Jo’ constant interruptions, clarifications, pointing out mistakes, disagreements, questioning. It is a middle position because Jack is compelled by the tradition (recalls his own mother) and society to inculcate certain moral lessons in Jo but at the same time he is unable to satisfy Jo’s lingering anxiety
