The alternative hypothesis is the hypothesis that is contrary to the null hypothesis and it is denoted by H. 

For example,  if H1 : µ = 15, then the alternative hypothesis will be : H1 : µ ≠ 15, (or) H1 : µ < 15 (or) H1 : µ > 15.
