A  steel rod of length 25 cm has a cross - sectional area of 0.8 cm2 . Find the force required to stretch this rod by the same amount as the expansion produced by heating it through 10°C. (coefficient of linear expansion of steel is 10-5/°C and young's modulus of steel is 2 x 1010 Nm-2)

This required force is given by F = YA\(aΔt\)  = 2 x 1010 x 0.8 x 10-4 x 10-5 x 10 = 160 N
