Political leadership brings change to foreign policy of any country based on its articulation of national interest. Jawaharlal Nehru began the policy of non-alignment by being equidistant between USA and USSR while Indira Gandhi grew closer to USSR and signed a treaty. The Janta government subsequently began a policy of genuine nonalignment and began to balance USA and USSR.
