किसी धातु की एक सतह को अलग -अलग तरंगदैर्घ्य 248 nm तथा 310 nm से प्रदीप्त किया जाता है । इन तरंगदैर्घ्य के संगत ( corresponding ) निकलने वाले प्रकाश - इलेक्ट्रॉनों ( photoelectrons ) की अधिकतम चालें क्रमशः `v_(1)` तथा `v_(2)` हैं । यदि अनुपात `v_(1) : v_(2)=2:1` तथा hc=1240 eV nm है , तब धातु का कार्य फलन लगभग है :
A. 3.7 eV
B. 3.2 eV
C. 2.8 eV
D. 2.5 eV.

`(1)/(2) mv_(1)^(2) = (hc)/(lambda_(1))-W` तथा ` (1)/(2) mv_(2)^(2) = (hc)/(lambda_(2))-W`
`(v_(2)^(2))/(v_(2)^(2))=((hc)/(lambda_(1))-W)/((hc)/(lambda_(2))-W) hrArr (4)/(1) =((1240)/(248)-W)/((1240)/(310)-W)=(5 eV - W)/(4 eV - W)`
`:. 16 eV - 4 W = 5 eV - W`
अथवा `3 W = 11 eV`
`W=(11)/(3) eV = 3.7 eV`.
