Explanation:

(i) As per CI. 26.5.3.1(h) of IS 456:2000 defines Pedestal as a compression member when effective length of the compression member is less than 3 times of the least lateral dimension.

(ii) As per CI. 25.1.1 of IS 456:2000 defines column as a compression member when effective length of the compression member exceeds three times the least lateral dimension.

(iii) For Pedestals (le/D < 3), a minimum reinforcement of 0.15% of gross pedestal area is provided.
