Correct Answer - Option 2 : GO-NO GO gauge

Explanation:

Limit Gauging

  • It is the method of checking dimensions with the help of non-recording type of gauges. The gauges which are used in this method are known as limit gauges.
  • Limit gauges are used to determine that the given job lies within the limit or not.
  • Limit gauging method is used for the inspection of the rigid design component. It is used to check the dimension of the manufactured parts.
  • Gauges does not give the actual value of the dimensions of the measured parts. They are only used to check that the inspected component satisfies its specified limit or not.
  • It simply determines that the part is inside or outside the tolerance zone. In other words we can say that it is just used to check that part is correct or not.

Need of Limit Gauging

  • Following are the two methods which are used to check the components at the workshop level (shop floor)

a) Measurement by using measuring instruments

b) Measurement by using non-recording limit gauges.

  • With the help of measuring instrument it is difficult to measure each and every dimension of the given component.
  • But with the help of limit gauges measurement is faster, easier and does not need skill operator.
  • In repetitive work it is difficult to check dimensions with the precision instrument such as vernier, micrometer etc. and it is also uneconomical.
  • This conventional method of measurement needs skilled operator and also it requires more time.
  • In case of mass production interchangeability is need to be maintain at comparatively low cost. Hence in such cases limit gauges are used for the measurement

Advantages of Limit Gauges

  • It can be used in mass production at relatively low cost.
  • It is a faster inspection method which leads to increase in productivity.
  • It confirms the interchangeability of the component so that they are easy to assemble.
  • It can check linear and geometric features at the same time.
  • No need of skilled operator.
  • The use of limit gauges is economical as it's inspection cost is low.

Limitations of Limit Gauges

  • It only indicates that whether the component is in specified limit or not. It does not give any information about its actual dimensions.
  • While checking wear phenomena may introduced.
  • With the limit gauges it is difficult to check component with finer tolerance.
