Correct Answer - Option 2 : It is not adequate deterrent to unacceptable behaviour

Punishment is one of the most essential tools used by teachers and parents in schools and at home to control student conduct and discipline.

  • Punishment is described as anything that reduces the chances of a behaviour occurring; physical discomfort, withdrawal of attention, loss of tangibles or activities, a rebuke, or even something that others might find pleasant but the individual does not appreciate.

Punishment's main purpose is to instil dread in the pupil so that the behaviour does not repeat again. Teachers discipline pupils at school for being late to class, breaking school rules, failing to complete classroom assignments, and failing to do better on tests and examinations, among other things.

  • Despite the fact that punishment appears to be an appropriate technique for controlling behaviour and student discipline. Punishment for unacceptable behaviour is of limited value in as much as it is not an adequate deterrent to unacceptable behaviour.
  • The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognised that corporal punishment used by teachers and parents in schools and homes is ineffective, dangerous, and unacceptable because it has negative rather than positive effects on students.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that punishment for unacceptable behaviour is of limited value in as much as it is not an adequate deterrent to unacceptable behaviour.
