The merging of one electron and one hole in semiconductors is known as recombination.

Recombination:

  • Semiconductors are characterized by two types of mobile carriers, electrons in the conduction band and holes in the valence band; Both bands are separated by an energy gap
  • When an electron loses energy and falls into the valance band, it gets neutralized by a hole which absorbs its energy; This process is called recombination and the energy of recombination will emerge as a photon
