Correct Answer - Option 1 : John Locke

John Locke can be called the founder of Empiricism, a theory according to which knowledge originates from sense – experience. He was against his predecessors who believed in innate ideas.

  • Locke says that the infant's brain is like a white paper, the mind is empty. It is “Tabula Rasa”, an empty tablet
  • The mind has the capacity to apprehend but it is wrong to say that certain propositions are already there.
  • The material of knowledge in infants comes from experience.

Locke said knowledge is of three kinds-

  • Intuitive Knowledge
    • which is the ideal, infallible and self-evident
  • Demonstrative knowledge
    • that is relational, analytic, concerning abstractions. Knowledge of morality, God’s existence and mathematical knowledge belong to this category
  • Sensitive knowledge
    • which is concerning co-existence, based on simple ideas of sense and complex ideas

Thus from above-mentioned points, it is clear that John Locke believed that an infant's brain is like a 'Tabula Rasa'.
