Correct Answer - Option 1 : Red algae

The correct answer is Red algae.

Concept-

  • Algae come under kingdom Plantae.
  • Algae is divided into three classes based on the photosynthetic pigments.
  • Green Algae or Chlorophyceae- The pigment of green algae is chlorophyll a and b.
  • Brown Algae or Phaeophyceae- The pigment of brown algae is chlorophyll a, c and fucoxanthin.
  • Red Algae or Rhodophyceae-  The pigment of red algae is chlorophyll a, d and phycoerythrin.

Explanation-

  • Red algae found in great depths in oceans where relatively little light penetrates.
  • In the depth of the sea, the amount of R - phycoerythrin is more in red algae and because of this pigment, their colour is red.
  • Penetration power is maximum in ultraviolet and violet light. R - phycoerythrin is the only pigment to absorb ultraviolet and violet light.
  • Due to phycoerythrin red algae are the deepest algae.

  • Blue-green algae belong to the kingdom Monera rather than Plantae.
