Total balls played = 16

Total runs = 86

Calculations:

Ratan scored his runs only in boundaries.

Let the number of fouRs. be x and the number of sixes be y.

Total balls played = 16

⇒ x + y = 16

⇒ x = 16 – y     ----(1)

Total runs = 86

⇒ 4x + 6y = 86     ----(2)

Put value of x from equ. (1) to eq. (2)

⇒ 4(16 – y) + 6y = 86

⇒ 64 – 4y + 6y = 86

⇒ 2y = 22

⇒ y = 11

From eq. (1)

x = 16 – 11 = 5

x = 5 and y = 11

Runs scored in the boundaries i.e fouRs. = 4 × 5 = 20
