Correct Answer - Option 3 : Collaborative - Based on medical model

Assessment plays a major role in how students learn, their motivation to learn, and how teachers teach. Assessment must be planned with its purpose in mind. Assessment for, as, and of learning all have a role to play in supporting and improving student learning and must be appropriately balanced. The most important part of the assessment is the interpretation and use of the information that is gleaned for its intended purpose. Assessment is used for various purposes.

  • Assessment for learning: where assessment helps teachers gain insight into what students understand in order to plan and guide instruction and provide helpful feedback to students.
  • Assessment as learning: where students develop an awareness of how they learn and use that awareness to adjust and advance their learning, taking increased responsibility for their learning.
  • Assessment of learning: where assessment informs students, teachers, and parents, as well as the broader educational community, of achievement at a certain point in time in order to celebrate success, plan interventions, and support continued progress.

Two assessment approaches are as follows:

  • Traditional Assessment: This method of assessment has been followed for a long time.
    • It is a simple approach that generally uses a pen and paper or computer-based examination method which includes questions such as multiple-choice, true and false, or matching items.
    • This method controls the student’s potential and does not allow out of the box thinking. Thus, students' are viewed as passive recipients of assessment.
  • Collaborative Assessment: In this assessment, two or more learners assess their own learning together. This assessment procedure is related to the curriculum. Steps for collaborative assessment are as follows:
    • Present a problem to the learners in order to elicit different skills learned through the learning session.
    • The teacher should provide clear objectives, criteria to demonstrate what they have been learning, and clearly defined expectations.
    • Then allow learners to work in groups or pairs and allow them to define the roles that are required for the task.
    • Also, they should be allowed to use different technologies. However, the teacher will not suggest nor define a specific tool.

From the above, it is clear that collaborative assessment is not based on the medical model.
