A satellite with K.E. Ek is revolving round the earth in a circular orbit. How much more K.E. should be given to it so that it may just escape into outer space ?

Correct option: (A) Ek

Explanation:

Let Vo be orbital speed.

hence Ek = (1/2)mV02 

Let Ve be escape velocity

then Ve = √2 Vo 

KE required for rscape = Ek'

hence  Ek' = (1/2)mVe2 

= (1/2) × m × 2Vo2 

Ek' = mVo2 

i.e. Ek' = 2Ek 

hence

additional KE = 2Ek – Ek = Ek
