CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) banned the international commercial trade in African elephant ivory by placing the species on Appendix I in 1989. This ban went into effect in 1990.
Effect of this ban:
1. After this ban population of elephants in the wild condition started to stabilize.
2. Due to this ban the poaching, which was increased epidemically had hit so much of the African elephants' range, was greatly reduced.
3. Ecological balance (dependent on elephants) was again established.
