What is the density of ocean water at a depth where the pressure is 80 atm, given that its density at the surface is 1.03 x 103 kg/m3 ? Compressibility of water = 45.8 x 10–11/Pa. Given: 1 atm = 1.013 x 105 Pa.

Best answer

P = 80 atm = 80 x 1.013 x 105 Pa

Compressibility = 1/K = 45.8 x 10-11/Pa;

Density of water at the surface = ρ = 1.03 x 103 kg/m3

 Let ρ′ = density of water at a given depth; V′ = Vol. of water of mass M at given depth

 V = Vol. of same mass of water at the surface

V = M/ρ and V' = M/ρ'

Change in Vol. = ∆V = V – V'
