Due to small area of cross-section, on the hole, fluid flows out of the vessel with a large speed and thus the fluid possesses a large linear momentum. As no external force acts on the system, the total momentum of the system is conversed i.e., vessel acquires a backward momentum in order to conserve linear momentum i.e., a backward thrust results on the vessel.
